Ansell, W
Walter Ansell

My father Walter Ansell was in the Queen Victoria Rifles during the war. He was sent to Calais in 1940, was captured and ended up in Stalag VIIIB until 1945. He was in the march from Poland to Germany called the Death March and as I grew up, he told me about his life in capture, the march to Germany and his eventual return home.
I did not realise how bad things were for him until I began reading about life in Stalag VIIIB and saw the footage on Yesterday, the television programme. Dad is now in his 99th year and sadly now in care. I cannot believe they were not given any recognition for the part they played in WW2.
God bless all the survivors of that terrible place.
