At the end of July 1944 he crossed into Switzerland near Lake Como and was sent to a refugee camp. After three weeks, there being a severe shortage of food in the camp and with no chance of repatriation, he returned to Italy remaining behind the lines until mid-April 1945 when he crossed the line as the Allies advanced up Italy. Fortunately he linked up immediately with a South African unit re-uniting with five former university friends making the issue of proving who he really was a mere formality.
