Information provided by Christine Williams (Daughter) :
My father, Eric Carl Albert Berg was a POW for most of the war.
His details are as follows:
Regimental number : SX9341
Date of birth : 24th November 1907
Place of Birth : Evandale, South Australia
Enlisted : 2nd AIF , Wayville,SA, 2nd August 1940He was missing, presumed dead on 31st October 1942 after a major attack on the enemy at El Alamein from 23 October 1942.
He had been wounded with schrapnel in the left thigh and disclosed himself to the Germans the next day.Interned P.G. 106 Vercelli, Italy from 20 November 1942.
Interned P.G. 57 Grupignano, Italy 16 December 1942.
Interned Stalag 18A Spittal, Austria 14 September to 14 October 1943.
Interned St Marienne Work Camp (Stalag 18A) Austria from 14 October 1943.
Recovered by Allies in Western Europe 14 April 1945.I would like to follow his trail in the POW Camps and flesh out his time there as I am the family historian and have sadly neglected this side of things. He was an artist of sorts and I do have a small picture he painted presumably at St Marienne of a play setting with the fellows in costume all in their positions on their “stage”.
