Blewitt, F G
Frederick George Blewitt
My father, Frederick George Blewitt, was a POW for nearly 5 years.
He was in the same camp as one Jimmy Howe a bandsman later prominently attached to the Queens Guards band as its leader whose rank after the war was Lieutenant Colonel. L.T. Howe toured Australia in 1957 and my father recognized him in the paper. They met and spent the day together. I have photos of their reunion on this royal trip.
I have many photos of the camp and many with my father and others performing theatre.
I have little knowledge of his times as a prisoner and can’t find any records pertaining to this but have the photos.
He was born 11/1/1911 and was taken prisoner in France and marched to Belgium I believe.
As I understand from conversations with him, he knew Douglas Bader also Stalag VIIIB.
He helped prisoners escape.
He spoke fluent German and was able to procure instruments for the band that that Jimmie Howe started in camp. I have photos signed by all the bandsmen.
My Dad died September 1969 of lung cancer in Brisbane, Australia.
