Briand, J
Lance Corporal Jean-Leo Briand
From: Roger Briand
Subject: POW
My father was with the R22R Canadian Army, he was captured in northern Italy Nov. 1943. I have his records from the military that state unofficial POW Stalag 344 in June 1944. Then an entry (now supported POW Stalag 344 Germany). Would this officially place him in the Lamsdorf camp? My father’s name is Jean-Leo Briand he was from the Province of Québec.

More info on my father Jean-Leo Briand he was a L/Cpl (lance Corporal his service number was E-5757), in the picture my father is in the middle and the sergeants on either side of him are Sgt Rouleau and Sgt Beauchamp the names were on the back of the photograph. The other is a photo of my dad’s diary written in French and states that he was captured on the 26 Nov. 1943 and escaped on the 8th of Dec recaptured on the 10th Dec 1943, and then escaped again on the 14th of April 1945 at 10 O’clock at night. The story he told me after this is that they ran into some American soldiers and got into a scuffle with them because they did not want to go back to the POW camp. They then were told that the war had been over for around three days he recounted to us at home then I gather they returned to the camp and were accounted for and returned to the Canadian Unit. The PDF file is of my dad’s service record which shows him as reported missing.
Where the photo of my father was taken, I do not know maybe somewhere in Sicily or Italy or even in England before they started out.
