Ann Duggan says: The photo is one I found among my parent’s papers after my mum died. It is of an older lady with a younger lady standing each side. On the back is written 405743 Private Harry Brown British Prisoner of War 17311 Stalag VIIIB Germany. I have no idea who the man is but would love to know as I have been doing family tree research. My mum was born in Australia to Scottish parents and my dad emigrated from Yorkshire with his family in 1926 so I am tending to think the connection could be through my dad although that’s only a guess as I discovered on a pay per view web site that the man was a member of The East Surrey Regiment. My Scottish Grandmother had a sister who went to live in Wiltshire so it is also possible she could be a connection. If anyone could tell me any more about Harry Brown, I would be very grateful.

Further information received on 19th March 2011: You recently were kind enough to post a photo on your site that I had found among my parent’s papers. It had belonged to Harry Brown who had been a prisoner of war in Lamsdorf. I have since discovered Harry’s relationship to my family. The Surrey History Centre looked up records they had of The East Surrey Regiment and was able to tell me that Harry’s full name was Harry Thomson Brown and his next of kin was a Mrs Brown who had lived in Aberdeen. Through finding his birth record in Aberdeen in 1906 on Scotland’s People I discovered that he was the brother of Alice Cecilia Brown who married my grandmother’s brother Alex Jack.  Harry and Alice’s parents were William and Jeannie Brown of Aberdeen. Other information I discovered was that he had enlisted in May 1939 and was repatriated 8th May 1945. He was transferred to class Z Reserve on 6th Feb 1946. The Surrey History Centre said also that his army number 405743 was one that was not allocated to The East Surrey Regiment but to a dragoon regiment so he must have transferred into the East Surrey Regiment at some time. It has been very rewarding to find out where the photo fits into our family and I have been able to add Harry to the Family tree that my cousin and I are compiling. I was also very happy to know that he got home safely.

Ann Duggan.
