Douglas was shot in the shower block on 13 December 1943. A second fatality that day was Sidney Arthur Smith, Royal Engineers 226 Field co. Service number 2193840.

German reports state that Doug attacked a guard, however eye witness War Crimes accounts suggest that the guard hit Doug first, then shot him.

He now lies in the Commonwealth War Graves cemetery in Krakow.
