My father James R. Butler of the Royal Sussex Regiment was captured at Dunkirk and spent the remainder of the war as a POW.

It joined the 133rd (Royal Sussex) Brigade, with the 4th and 5th Battalions. The brigade was deployed to France with the British Expeditionary Force and was involved in the fighting withdrawal to Dunkirk in Apr to Jun 1940. The 2nd Battalion was employed detached from the brigade and suffered particularly heavy casualties. James was wounded at Dunkirk and transferred to camp 344
