(William) Gordon Campbell of the Lowland Borders Infantry was captured at St Valery and sent to Stalag VIIIB to work the coalmines.

He and a pal called Ralph, from Northumberland, escaped from the long march and were helped eventually by some French people.

The account is sketchy as uncle Gordon did not say too much about his experiences and he sadly passed away at St John’s Hospital, Livingston, West Lothian, Scotland on 21 Jan 1995.
