Campbell, C
Private Charles Campbell
My father, Charles Campbell was a prisoner in Lamsdorf. He was a Private in the Black Watch (No. 2756460). He enlisted on 3 August 1939 and was part of the BEF and I believe captured at St. Valery as he was posted as missing on 16 June 1940 and identified in the record I have from the Ministry of Defence as a prisoner at Stalag VIIIB from the same date.
He died in November 1988 and never spoke about his war experiences apart from mentioning that he and two others escaped whilst on a long march – which I assume was the last long march westwards to escape the Russians – and after sheltering in a pig sty overnight they eventually made their own way back to allied lines.
I am currently trying to scan in all our old family photos and have come across one which I think must have been taken at the camp. I am attaching it together with what is on the back so it was definitely sent via the POW postal system. My father is on the top row at far left. In addition I have found what I think must be uniform badges probably which had to be worn as a POW – I am also attaching a photo of one of these.
