Regimental Sergeant Major Tom Cleaver
My name is Tom Evans, great-grandson of RSM Tom Cleaver who was at Lamsdorf who I was named after. He died of TB two weeks after finally getting home to my great grandma and after everything that happened in the previous few years and all of their determination to hold on and get home is truly tragic.

My father Tom Cleaver was a POW at Stalag VIIIB
My grandson – Tom Evans has contacted you and you kindly forwarded some very interesting news, which he has passed on to me.
I regret not delving into my father’s past at the camp, but this was probably because he sadly died a very short time after returning to this country and I was not able to learn at first hand from him about his time there.
My father was captured in Belgium after being badly wounded and being tended in a church which was being used as a makeshift casualty post. I have no doubt that despite the two “marches” (one across Germany to Poland and the subsequent return) he survived only on the will power to return to his home and family.
