Private George William Cope
My grand uncle’s name was George William Cope and his regimental number was 5887506. From what I can gather he served with the Northamptonshire Regiment and became a prisoner of war after being captured during the withdrawal at Dunkirk.
George remained at Stalag VIIIB 344 for the duration of the war and his POW number was 12940.
I would very much like to see his name upon your website as testimony to what he went through and still he never gave up! This is something that I and my family are very proud of.
I have also been looking through some of the photos that you hold on your site and I think I may have identified George in one of your photo’s. This is still to be confirmed as I need to show it to George’s only living brother, but I’ve attached the afore mentioned photo with a colour photo of George a few years before he died and as you will see there are similarities in the face.
In the Black & White photo from your page George ‘could’ be the one in the back row (top of page) Fifth from the left and in the colour photo George is the one fifth from the left again.
I have an image of George in the Stalag VIIIB 344 camp and would like to share it with you. George is the first man from the left on the rank that is sitting, there is white writing below him. The image also includes other soldiers and maybe someone may recognize them?
If you decide to use the image upon your website, could you please credit myself for the image and hopefully some other living ancestors will contact me.
Lee Cope.
