Private James Colvin Craig
Jim Craig was a driver for the NZ Mobile Dental Unit. On April 25 1941 he was in a group of 21 who were cut off behind the NZ Division at Kalamata, Greece. The men escaped capture & were assisted by local Greeks to commandeer 3 boats. They sailed & rowed along the Mani Peninsula & were well protected & fed by locals on the way. They reached Crete on May14. After capture Jim was transferred by boat to Salonika (Thessalonika) & then by train to Stalag VIIIB. He remained there until he was repatriated, he travelled by train & ship to Egypt in November 1943. He left Cairo on December 31 1943 on the Wanganella, a safe Red Cross ship, & disembarked at Wellington on February 2 1944.
