Subject: Prisoner William (Bill) Crisp (Army Number unknown)

My uncle William Crisp was incarcerated in Stalag VIIIB /344. He was a member of the Buffs Regiment. He was captured in Tobruk, North Africa by the Afrika Corps.

During his time in Lamsdorf he escaped twice but was recaptured each time.

He was twice mentioned in Despatches, presumably in recognition of his two escape escapades. A background to one of these escapes was that the Germans had planted someone in the camp in order to give out false “Safe Addresses ” for prospective escapees. My uncle took advantage of this which ultimately led to his capture.

He was also part of a forced (Death) march as the Russians approached.

He returned to his hometown of Dartford, Kent England in 1946. He later suffered a mental breakdown but recovered and lived until around 1969.
