Captain Anthony Crook
Captain Anthony Crook R.A.M.C but attached to the Royal Warwickshire Regiment, he was part of the 2nd Battalion that was sent to France and with the B.E.F in September 1939. He remained with the Warwicks throughout the campaign and was active during the the Battle for the Escaut and eventually found himself at Wormhoudt 27th May 1940.
The Regimental Aid Post was set up in a cellar of a four story house which was located at the square in Wormhoudt and close by to the Battalion HQ, during the battle the cellar filled with the wounded and struggled to cope with bringing other wounded men due to the sheer ferocity of the fighting, this led to all of the vehicles being used by the stretcher bearers being destroyed.
Captain Crook was eventually taken prisoner along with Albert Montague when trying to rescue Major Harborne who was lying wounded in the house opposite to the R.A.P. Crook was a wily and intelligent man and was able to persuade the Germans to issue a pass to transport the wounded through German lines, making use of a military vehicle he effected his escape along with many wounded, among them, Major Harborne to escape and make for Dunkirk.
He was awarded the Military Cross for his gallant efforts to rescue and look after the wounded after the battle for Wormhoudt, after evading the Germans for some days he was eventually re-captured and spent the rest of the war as a POW.
