Subject: Memoirs from my Granddad – POW William Arthur Dance
I came across your website after reading my Granddad’s memoirs and wanting to find out more about his experiences and the camps he was held.
Feeling the information he left behind might be of interest to you and others, I’ve typed up and scanned in a letter and article he wrote for his local Salvation Army newsletter.
POW Camps – Lamsdorf, Blenchammer, Genshagen, Moosburg (Stalag VIIA).
Surname – Dance
Forenames – William Arthur
Nationality – British
Service – Army
Rank – Sapper
When captured – 30th May 1940
Where captured – Dunkirk
I hope you’ll find this information of use for your records and of course of interest.
It’s lovely to see that through such terrible times, such strong friendships were formed.
I’m the ‘litte granddaughter’ he refers to in the article. Now not so little at the ripe old age of 31. I’m still friends with the German girl he mentions, Steffi, my next door neighbour. What a brave man my Granddad was to return to a country that once showed him very little mercy.
