My father in law, Captain James Henry Gibson, was a POW at Stalag 344. We have documents and a letter. He was captured during the failed commando raid on Tobruk. He was the sole Canadian and physician, seconded to the Black Watch.

He told me a story how prisoners from outside Stalag 344 were routinely brought in to do work. The POWs had heard rumours of death camps. A plot was hatched to switch clothing with one of these workers so they could reconnoitre and verify.
