While on the long march, Gidney gave his log book to Canadian friend Howard Jones. The men were separated and Jones kept the logbook untill he died in 1980. In 2009, with the help of the Red Cross, Conroy’s daughter Maureen Manningham managed to locate Gidney’s family and reunite Gidney’s daughter, Marilyn Buttery, with her father’s logbook.
