Subject: GEORGE GLOVER
My father, George Glover, was born August 1918 at Cadishead, Lancashire (approx. 10 miles west of Manchester). He joined or was conscripted in 1939 into the Royal Artillery. Went to France in 1940 with the BEF, survived Dunkirk and was captured in North Africa in June 1942. Sent to camps in Italy, he ended up in Stalag VIIIB, Lamsdorf. I have his Stalag dog tag showing the number 28324. He did some work in a local brewery near the camp. His best pal at Lamsdorf was one Ray Baldwin. (Nothing further known.)
Photo. of George Glover. (The man in the middle.)
I think Ray Baldwin is directly next to my father’s right i.e., no.2 from left to right.
On the back of the photo is written Stalag VIIIB and my mother’s home address in England. Notice there are no bungs in the barrels and no labels on the bottles. Maybe the smiles are due to the fumes??? I remember many years ago my father talking about “winning” sugar from the brewery. How long he was there, in what capacity, I do not know. I imagine he was a general labourer used in the lifting and carrying jobs.
In civvy life he was employed on the railways.
