My Grandfather Bob (Robert Hamilton) from New Zealand spent time at Lamsdorf.

Please can you tell me what E580 Czeladz means. As this is where he was.

Many of the men held in Stalag VIIIB / 344 were not in the main camp but in smaller work camps known as Arbeits Kommandos. These had ‘E’ numbers – eg E580. The “E” prefix stands for English, but POWs from many Commonwealth countries worked in these camps. There is a list of some of them on the website. Czeladz is the name of the place where they were based. It is now known as Czeladź, which is in Poland. I suspect that the men of E580 worked in a coal mine, as this was (and is) an important coal mining area. You can find out more information about this place through this link:

Please include as much information and pictures as you can so that we can create a record of each man’s experience. With tens of thousands of POW records already on site please help us if you can by including at least one of the following: service number, POW number or date of birth.
