My grandad was in Stalag 344 his name was John Albert Edward Hammond.

 This is what I know:

John Albert E Hammond initially Royal Artillery, and Black Watch. 2nd World War.

He was captured at Dunkirk (whilst in Black Watch troop) and became a POW. He spent time in Dresden and was marched to Stalag 344 and then onto Stalag XXI-B.

The story goes that he helped a Christopher John Bergoine, an important Canadian officer, escape, by exchanging identities and hiding for weeks in the loft. He then escaped himself in March 1945. Very little beyond this is known. Grandad wrote to Christopher John Bergoine shortly after the war

Grandad was a keen footballer and I have been told he was in teams whilst a POW. He also played accordion, but I don’t know if he had access to one ‘inside’.
