Hardwell, E F G
Private Edgar Frederick George Hardwell
My father, Edgar F.G. Hardwell was a prisoner of war at Stalag VIIIb.
He was taken prisoner at Dunkirk, where he was in decoy B, defending the back line, a member of the Duke of Cornwall rifles.
He was then marched to Stalag VIIIb, where he stayed until the death march. During this march he and a few others decided ” to go for a walk”, and after a few experiences ended up in Prague, where he was taken in by the Czech resistance; eventually flying home in an American Dakota after the war had finished.
One of his possessions was a little red book which had, probably in excess of 200 names and addresses of fellow prisoners. I donated this book to the Duke of Cornwall rifles museum in Truro, and I feel confident that his book would contain additional names for our records.
