Hawkins, D C
Rifleman Douglas Charles Hawkins
Sent: Saturday, November 17, 2012
My name is Daniel Hawkins.
I’m contacting you about a small brown wallet that belonged to my Granddad Joseph Hawkins. Inside his wallet were two tags from Stalag VIIIB. Nr. 11952. I believe they were my Granddads brother, my great uncle Douglas Charles Hawkins who was captured at the start of WWII and was a prisoner of war for the duration.
Doug passed away before my grandfather so he, Joe ended up with them, my Granddad Joe passed a number of years back then I ended up with them, and I thought it would be nice if I could get confirmation/recognition that Doug was in Stalag.
There were three other tags inside the wallet, one being brass and shaped like a house with the no. 1345 as a template, the other two joined on rope one being a red circle with Hawkins on and some sort of no. It’s apparently a fire-resistant dog tag, the other being green, apparently a waterproof dog tag. I’d love to get Uncle Doug’s name on the list.
344 is the number of the camp (Stalag 344 was originally Stalag VIIIB but was re-numbered in 1943).
11952 was his POW number
He is shown as a Rifleman (Private) in the King’s Royal Rifle Corps.
