Hegerty, Arthur
Private Arthur Hegerty
My father was an inmate at Lamsdorf. He passed away a few years ago but never forgot his time at Lamsdorf nor on one of the long marches. Dad came to New Zealand in 1954 and remained here till his passing.
His name is Arthur Hegerty, He was born in London in 1919 and was part of the transport and services division.
After being captured in North Africa by the Italians he was handed over to the Germans who sent him to Stalag IVB. He was later sent onto Stalag VIIIB. I still have Dads Dog Tag which was issued at Stalag IVB
Dads younger brother who was 18months younger than Dad is still alive in London at the age of 93 and is ‘as sharp as a tack’. He served in the British Army from age 19 and served throughout North Africa, Europe and the Middle East finishing up as part of the Occupation.
My son and I are visiting Lamsdorf later this month and will be going on to spend time with my Uncle, Dad’s brother.
