My uncle stated he was serving on a Naval cargo ship in a convoy (they had had guns put onto this civilian ship and manned by Royal Artillary gunners) and his ship was sunk by the Scharnhorst early on in the war. He said he was in the “Long March” but I am not sure from where to where and one of the famous escape tunnels was dug at his POW Camp and it was a long tunnel, but he did not take any part in the dig. I think he was relieved by the US Army but I cannot be sure.
