Hutchinson, A
Private Arthur Hutchinson
I am 59 years old and live in the North East of England. I only recently found out the true identity of my father and that he had spent 5 years of the war firstly at Stalag VIIIB and then subsequently Stalag 344. [Editor’s note: these were the same camp]
His name was Private Arthur Hutchinson and he served with the RASC (army number T/153834). He was captured in 1940 and he left the camp in January 1945 on the long march. His POW number in the camp was 10269.
I have a diary he wrote in 1942 which as well as recording many in-camp football results, league and cup winners, has entries on lots of issues as well as including quite a number of fellow prisoners names. I have attached a scan of a picture of my father, a local newspaper article and picture, together with two other pictures taken in the camp and sent back to England. The other POWs names are listed on the back of the pictures if desired.
I also have a hand written account of the last weeks of the long march starting two days before the end of the war and continuing to the day my father finally arrived back home. Prior to that I have daily entries from setting off in early January recording the number of kilometers covered each day together with place names.
I would be grateful if you could add my father’s name to the “Names” list and maybe link the attached scan. If you wish to contact me about any of the above please do.
