Private Wilfred Leslie Ing
Information provided by Juliet Holdaway
I would like you to add my father’s name to the long list of prisoners held in Stalag VIIIB as I know he was there as I have obtained an Attestation and two Capture Cards from the International Committee of the Red Cross.
His name was Wilfred Leslie Ing, date of birth 01.05.1916, soldier in the 1st Welch Regiment, Service No. 3967520. He was captured in Crete 01.06.1941 and his Prisoner of War No. was 6329 Stalag VIIA. He arrived in Stalag VIIA on 07.07.1941, coming from a Dulag in Saloniki. He was transferred from Stalag VIIA to Stalag VIIIB on 14.04.1943 where he was detained.
The details after this are very sketchy for me as I am only just beginning to research. However I can report that he came home to Maidenhead, Berkshire, England where he lived until he died on 14.11.1979.
I am the only remaining member of the family and am trying to trace his movements during World War II. As far as I can remember, he was, along with an awful lot of other soldiers, on the converted cruise liner “RMS Aquitania” sailing around the Mediterranean Sea but I don’t know anything more than that and would like any details anyone may have about how he arrived on land in Saloniki from where his life as a POW began.
