Subject: Confirmed Prisoner at Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf: 2979158 Lance Corporal John Jamieson, 8th A & S H, Prisoner No. 17455My name is Gerard McEwan, and I am researching the life of John Jamieson, Born 30 December 1912 in Darvel, Ayrshire, Scotland.
John joined the 2nd Battalion the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (A & S H) in 1932 and served most of his time until early 1939 in India. He was transferred to the Reserve. ‘Called to the Colours’ later that year, he joined the 8th (Territorial) Battalion of the A & S H, part of 154 Brigade of the 51st (Highland) Division.
He was serving in D Company of the 8th Battn when he was captured on 7 June, 1940. His POW for Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf record is dated “15.7.40” and shows all his correct personal details including next of kin. His picture wearing battledress has his prisoner number, 17455 worn around his neck and across his chest.
His work parties are recorded under ‘Kommandos’ as:
2.8.40 – Laband 1 Kr. Gleiwitz verlegt
11.12.40 – nach Gleiwitz- Oeringen E 22He was repatriated to the United Kingdom on 11 May 1945 but I have no further details on how that took place.
Thank you for all your efforts in recording the lives of these brave men.
Editor’s Note; Place of Capture is recorded in the UK National Archives (WO416 record) as Blois Escarbotin. This is possibly Friville Escarbotin or Blois, both in France. Clarification required.
