John Jeffers was a lance corporal in the Lancashire Fusiliers and was in Working Party E3 at Blechhammer, where there were chemical factories. In 1945 he escaped to the Russian lines and was ultimately repatriated from Odessa

At the camp he was a member of the Jimmy Howe Band. Jimmy Howe was a professional band leader and as well as being the band leader and director of music for two Scottish regiments, he worked for the BBC as a conductor and organiser of band concerts throughout the UK.
