The National Archives (UK)Other Sources (WO416 records transcribed by and held at the UK National Archives. Data processed and prepared by Rick Catt and Brian Cooper)This officer was never at Oflag VA although WO 416/224/374 does state Oflag VA.
He arrived Stalag VIIIB by train from Italy in Sep 1943 and switched identity with a presently unknown POW who was sent to Oflag VA posing as Lt. Lindsay continuing to pose there as Lt Lindsay to the end.
Lindsay came under the protection of the Escape Committee. It is not clear whether he hid in open sight posing as the man who had departed for Oflag VA or was hidden in the camp with the Germans believing that an “other ranks” had escaped.
In Oct 44 Lindsay made an unsuccessful escape. This is recorded in WO 208/3336/98 Lindsay escaped with L/Cpl Daniel Green [WO 208/3336/98]. Green’s liberation questionnaire shows him sent to Stalag XVIIA Kaisersteinbruch after recapture Nov 44. [WO 344 liberation questionnaire] . Lindsay we presume was with him.
