Mailer, G
George Mailer
My father was a prisoner at Stalag VIIIB. Most of his time with work parties was shoveling coal. Not sure if it was onto or off railway wagons. I think it was off, so it might have been at a steel works. It was not a subject talked about by him or his fellow prisoners of war when they got back home.
He was taken prisoner at St Valery and a group of them from our home town stuck together from sign-up, training, through France and their time as POWs. They were all from Auchterarder, Scotland or surrounding area, and served with the 51st (Highland Division).
Other in the group were: William ( Bill ) Laurence, David Dow, Willie Murray
