Gunner Victor Stanley Martin
My late father Victor Stanley Martin army no: 5339183, rank Gnr, of the Royal Artillery was a POW at Stalag VIII B from 1942 -46 and took part in the ‘Death March’.
The only other thing I know is that for some time whilst a POW he was down the coal mines in the area. He was a proud man and never spoke of his war years, probably because his memories and experiences were to painful to recall, I can remember my mum telling me that he had violent nightmares on his return to UK and these went on for some time until his ‘demons’ became subdued, but never left him.
I still have my dad’s army ‘dog tags’ including his Stalag POW aluminium tag with his prisoner no: 28686 on, these are all on the original leather necklace. This is how I know of his POW camp.
I know my dad was taken prisoner somewhere in the desert sometime in1942 on the retreat back from Libya during the African campaign.
He died in 2010 at the age of 88, it has taken me some time to come to terms with this and be able to move forward and do this (I have visited the website several times over the years) in his memory.
I would be forever grateful if my dad’s details could be added to your records
If you need any other information please do not hesitate to contact me, as I have some of his army paperwork.
Many thanks
Yours sincerely
Roger Martin
