Lance Corporal George James Maybank
My father was held in Stalag VIIIB until 1945. His name was George James Maybank, Lance Corporal of the Gloucestershire Regiment. I am trying to find his army service number and his POW number. Unfortunately, he would not talk very much about his time as a POW, but I can remember his nightmares. I was born in 1946. Dad passed away in August of 1970 aged 58.
I don’t yet know which battalion he was in; I understand that both the 2nd and 5th were used as rear-guard for the Dunkirk evacuation. It was whilst trying to reach the beaches that he was captured, along with about 12 Territorials, by a couple of German officers who were dressed as monks. Dad was the only regular soldier amongst the group and when he tried asking the “monks” for directions pistols were drawn and that was that. The “monks” had uniforms on underneath the habits and both spoke perfect English. They had three rifles amongst them. I suppose dad had one. This was one of the few things that dad told me about the war and there was almost nothing about his time as a POW. It was during the time on a working party that he lost the top of his left middle finger when his hand was caught between two girders. The top joint was removed by a German doctor using only local anaesthetic with dad watching.
He would get a Christmas card each year from a Tom Gardener.
Roy Maybank.
