From Natalie Mayhew. 11/06/2024
Edwin George Albert ’Ted’ Mayhew 945507 was with 367 Battery, part of the British forces, sent to defend Cassel against the German advance in May 1940. After enduring heavy bombardment, intense fighting, and dire conditions with dwindling supplies and mounting casualties, Ted’s unit was eventually forced to evacuate and attempt a breakout towards Dunkirk. Ted was captured at Watou, sent to Stalag VIIIB and E72 Beuthen / Bytom (the Hohenzollern Coalmine). He survived the Death March in 1945.

Re. the photos:
‘Roll on Cockneys’ group: Ted Mayhew is fourth from the right in the back row of the image taken at E72 Beuthen / Bytom work camp probably in June 1942. Also, I believe other POWs in the photo are: George Hawkins 2nd left middle row, Ray Glover fifth from the right (next to Ted) back row, and Eric West fourth from the left back row.
Group of six: location and date unknown. Ted is bottom left in the front row and Eric West top right in the back row
Gang show, Ted fourth from left back row. Exact date/place as yet unconfirmed.
Ted Mayhew was a guitarist in the E72 band, 2nd from right seated, photo taken at E72 probably June 1942.
Ted Mayhew in the centre with guitar in another smaller E72 band group photo, date unknown.
Another E72 group image attached believed taken Winter 1941, Ted Mayhew 3rd from left middle row (also Eric West on the far right middle row)
