Subject: Signaller John Stephen (Jack) Mepham, Royal Sussex Reg’t.
I’m in the process of researching the military life of my step-grandfather
John Stephen (Jack) Mepham
2nd Battalion Royal Sussex Regiment in India, Egypt and the Sudan, plus his wounding and capture at Hazebrouck, France 28th May 1940 , and have just received his ‘file’ from the ICRC. It states that he was an inmate in Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf / Stalag 344 from the 26th November 1940 – 5th March 1941 and again Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf / Stalag 344 from the 9th September 1942 – 12th May 1944 when he was transferred out by medical train en route for repatriation in Barcelona 17th May 1944
His Army number was 6396152 and his prisoner number was 47937.
So if he could be remembered on your site it would be really great.
I also have a collection of reports from the ICRC detailing the ‘nuts and bolts’ of the prisoner and civilian internee exchange which took place in Barcelona 17th May 1944. I’ve translated them from the original French and find them fascinating as they give descriptions of the hospital trains employed and the diets of the prisoners being repatriated. If they are of any interest or use to you I would be very happy to send you copies.
