Milner, W
Corporal Willis Milner
In September 1939 Willis Milner left England as a signalman attached to the Worcester and Sherwood Foresters as part of the British expeditionary force (BEF) the mission did not go well and the BEF withdrew to the coast and Dunkirk.
His battalion formed part of the defensive ring around Dunkirk with the aim of giving as much time as possible to the troops being evacuated from the beaches.
His signal communications vehicle was destroyed by the approaching enemy, and later he and his section took a direct hit from an enemy shell killing some of his comrades and seriously wounding him in the leg, arm, and abdomen.
He received life saving surgery at a field dressing station next to a church before being taken prisoner and was eventually moved in cattle trucks to Lamsdorf Stalag VIIIB in Poland where he became POW number 325 and remained until repatriation.
A strong and proud man, husband, father and grandfather he will be greatly missed by all of those whose lives he touched
