Sergeant Victor Edwin Mitchell
Mitchell’s son, Greg, provided the following information:
Sent to Stalag VIIIB and then to Marlag O in 1943-44? (Rank of Warrant Officer). Tied to the “dummy Albert R.N.” made by John Worsley who also sketched him in Marlag O.
Born in Montreal in 1922, Joined the RCAF in 1940. Basic Training in Regina, SK, Flight Training in Windsor, ON then to Borden and Trenton. Overseas in 1941 to Great Britain, flew Army Coop unit on Lysanders, then on to Hurricanes and Spitfires with 92 Sqn. Ferried the first Spitfires up the coast of Africa to Eygpt. 92 Sqn pilots went into operations flying 80 Sqn Hurricanes and was eventually shot down in July 1942 flying the middle slot of an archaic formation: “Ass-end Charlie”.
After the war earned a degree from Sir George William University in Montreal, Married, 2 kids. Died 07 June 2014 in Milton, ON, aged 92.
