My late father was in Stalag VIIIB/344 Lamsdorf from about September 1943 until they were eventually evacuated in 1945. He did not go with the bulk of the inmates on the 1945 march due to ill-health. He was Staff Sergeant Coert Nicolaas Nell who had been captured after the battle of Sidi Rezegh on 23 November 1941. After capture he was a POW in Greece (their boat was torpedoed that should have taken them to Italy), and later in Italy. He wrote us his memories of being a POW in the Afrikaans language. One day I intend to make it available on a website! I was fortunate to visit Stalag VIIB with a Philip Baker tour group in September of 2007.
