Private Charles Edward (Charlie) Newman
From Shaun Newman 20/10/2023.
The information has been confirmed by the Worcestershire Regiment Museum and the National Archives.
Charles was originally in the 6th Battalion Royal Berkshire Regiment but was transferred to the 7th Battalion Worcestershire Regiment in November 1939. This was one month after my father was born 8th of October 1939 (Charles’s only son) Charles was sent to Marlborough before embarking to France in January 1940.
Charlie was captured in/around Lens on the 28th of May 1940 with the remaining members of the 7th.
Charles returned from the War in 1945 after completing the Long March. Unfortunately, Charles suffered with mental illness on his return and was diagnosed with Battle Fatigue and also Schizophrenia. He was admitted into the Fairmile Hospital Cholsey, Oxfordshire, England.
Charlie spent the rest of his life in The Fairmile Hospital in Cholsey where he passed away in December 1966 from Emphysema and Pneumonia aged 52.
I managed to find a photo of Charles actually in Stalag VIIIB, Lamsdorf Camp on the Worchester Regiment Museum site. I have also attached a picture of Charlie taken after his return wearing his Demob suit.
Charles was my Grandfather.
