My Uncle George told the family of his story of being the only survivor of submarine H49. All other crew members were lost in the submarine. The wreck itself was discovered in 1984 by a Dutch diver. It is now declared a war grave.

I have been researching and document gathering over the years since 1995. I was able to obtain is Prisoner of War record card from the National Archive.

Camps Stalag XXA (9 Oct 1941) Marlarg Nord.

George was moved around many times and was on the long march. George returned home to West Hartlepool and died on the 11th January 1997 at Janard Nursing Home Hartlepool.
