Private Frederick Ernest Painting
From: Izaia, Sunday, February 2, 2014
My father, Private Frederick Ernest Painting was captured at Dunkerque in the rear-guard action by the Worcestershire regiment and taken to Stalag VIIIB.
He was there until the great march which he escaped from on the first night of the march, as he knew he was too weak to survive. He made it and was picked up by US tanks and was nearly shot as he had no dog tags, as they had been removed when he was unconscious after a shell exploded close by and buried him in mud, perforating his eardrum. He was then partially run over by a tank. Another soldier running past, thought he was dead, and snatched his tags.
I have a document of identity issued to him by the adjutant general of the American forces in Europe.
