I have recently been trying to find out more about my dad’s military history because he, like so many of his generation, said ‘it ain’t worth talking about’.

He served with the Royal Artillery and was a prisoner at Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf.  His name was Thomas John Perring, a gunner and I think he was captured during the North African Campaign his PoW number was 35017.  He died a couple of years ago just short of his 95th birthday.

When he returned home, he gave a cousin of mine a 20 Belgian Franc note, and travel warrant that she thinks were given to him when they were liberated by the Americans but never actually needed to use.
