Gilbert died in 1986. I know his funeral date because it was my 8th birthday so it was 1986 Feb 13th.
He was living in Ward Lane, Birmingham when he died of lung cancer at home.
Remarkably, he had been very ill, but got up under his own power, washed dressed in clean pyjamas then lay down and said, ‘I don’t want you all to have to do it’, and passed away within the hour.

He was my hero in many ways.

Thank you for keeping the memory of these men alive and making sure they are not forgotten.
