Subject: Roden Barnsdale Pickford-POW Stalag IIIB* from December 1942 to 1945

I have just read a book written by Jack Hardie (from Timaru to Stalag IIIB*) a friend of my late father Roden Pickford. Both of them were POWs of the above camp. I have just googled the camp and was looking through the list of names and found that my father’s name is not there. Roden was a Lancaster rear gunner and was the only survivor, shot down over Belgium at a town called Saint Maria-Lierde near Geraardsbergen. A monument has been set up there and memorial service is held every year on the 21st of December at the time of the crash. All the info on it is on web site www.wingsofmemory.be (Lancaster DX-P W4234).

Editor’s note: The book by Jack Hardie is entitled “From Timaru to Stalag VIIIB”. Pickford and Hardie are recorded by the National Archives UK as being at Stalag VIIIB Lamsdorf.
