My Father, Harold Pitt, Private 5250898, 7th Battalion, The Worcestershire Regiment, was captured while attempting to recover wounded comrades on the evening of 26th May, 1940 between Givenchy and La Bassee in Northern France. As POW No 5585 he spent time in Posen, Amstahl, Grune, Schildburg, Schubin and 3 years in BAB 21 at Blechhammer working on the “Baustelle” site which manufactured gas and oil from coal. He was known as “Ginger” by his mates. He died 10th April, 2011 aged 93. I made 2 videos of him recounting his wartime experiences in the Worcestershire regiment and as a POW which can be viewed at:
