Robins, G E
Private George Earnest Robins
George Ernest Robins, of East Surries.
Taken prison at Dunkirk 8 June 1940.
Escaped from the death March with five or so others, hiding in a church crypt until the Russian tanks arrived; these taking them for be German deserters were ready to execute them. Luckily a Russian officer intervened, and gave them a sort of pass to show any other Russian troops, but told them they would have to make their own way to Odessa, which they did finally. After medical treatment they were put on a convoy ship “the war still being in progress” and arrived in England at the end of March 1945.
His prisoner number was 6028.
He did volunteer for a working party, which was in the coal mine. Most of the other prisoner in his hut being Durham Light Infantry, I suppose the Germans thought they must all be from coal mines. George’s health was never good from then on but he lived until 1983 died at the age of 64years.
Please add his name to your list of Stalag VIIIB prisoners.
His widow Mrs Joan Robins
