My dad was captured at Tobruk ,where he served with the ROAC as a Lance corporal at the time .He was reported as a P.O.W. via Rome and taken to campo 66 in Italy initially on 29 August 1942. He was transferred to campo 78 Sulmona. On 23 March 1943 he was listed as a POW in Camp 78. When the Italians capitulated he escaped and made his way south and met up with Allied troops, back to the Allied Lines. I am told that Salvatore Colangelo was responsible for helping Dad evade the enemy soldiers whilst an escapee. He reached Southern Italy and awaited for transport back to the UK on 3 February 1944.
Dad recuperated and remained with the British Army until 1959 when he retired as a WO1.
Dad never spoke of his ordeal and I only found out after he passed away at the age of 57.
