Bombardier Percy Charles Rollings
Information provided by Kim Sabberton
My grandad Percy Charles Rollings was first in a camp in Italy but was then taken to Poland.
I only know what he told me and what I found on ancestry.co.uk, forces war records and find my past.
My grandad was born on 7 Oct 1915 in Battersea. He was called up on 15 July 1940 (the day before my mum was born). His army number was 1588018. He told me he was captured in North Africa and taken to an Italian camp. He said that when Italy pulled out of the war he, along with the others were taken to Poland (Stalag VIIIB). I don’t know if it was because of the war, but my mum told me that she never knew her dad to have anything other than grey hair.
I’ve read that men from this camp were taken on the death march, but he didn’t mention that.
Sites like yours make sure that men like my grandad will never be forgotten.
According to the records, when he was in the Italian camp he was a Bombardier, yet in the Poland camp he was classed as a gunner.
