My father was captured at Dunkirk and took part in the long marches in both directions. I know he escaped five times and worked in a Salt mine in East Silesia. He was also incarcerated in more than one camp. I also believe he was rescued from the “Death March” either by being hidden in a hay barn or in a hay cart. Frost bite having made him go lame. I think he ended up in a military hospital somehow aided by the Red Cross.

My mother had met him, earlier in the war through the letters she sent to the Red Cross which were delivering them to soldiers who were not receiving any mail. I’m sure this happened but can’t currently find any evidence to prove this.
