My Dad was reported missing on 16th January 1942, and taken to Campo PG 57 at Posta Millitara, then transferred to Campa PG 148 PM03200, both camps in Northern Italy, then to Stalag VIII POW number 29896 on 12th November 1943 till the end of the war. He would have been only 21 when first captured, he had put his age up to join the war [was he crazy!!], had his birthday down as 1919, but he was born on 31st May 1920.
His Name was Horace Campbell SNELL, date of birth 31-5-20.. On the photos I have sent, the one with no one sitting in the front, he is number four from the left in the front row. The second photo he is number three from the left in the second row. The man directly in from of him, on the left is his twin brother Frederick Billings SNELL.
Could you please give me any information, as of course he did not speak of this time, only that the German’s told him he had a good German name, as in Schnell Markham. He told him it was German, but of course it is English. I have some of his history sheets which I received from the NZ Army.
Also, would you be able to tell me, are those men in the photos, New Zealanders? I know one of them is, I recognised one of my Dad’s old mates.
Thank you
